Bayern Munich defeated Barcelona 2-0 on Robert Lewandowski’s return to Munich in the Champions League

Two second-half goals in three minutes, including a superb chip from Leroy Sane, helped Bayern Munich defeat Barcelona

Bayern’s France defender Lucas Hernandez headed in a corner to open the scoring, with Leroy Sane doubling the score to make it a thumping win for Bayern.

Leroy Sane continued his good form like his performance against Inter Milan, which was going very well for Barcelona as they put up a good performance.

Lucas headed in a corner from Jimmie Kimmich in the 50th minute, and then just 3 minutes later Leroy Sane made it 2-0, chipping a ball over Barca keeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen.

Robert Lewandowski, greeted by warm applause from the home fans during the pre-game warm-up, had several chances to open the scoring.

“I think for Lewy it was really an emotional game to come back – a little bit like coming home, because he was so successful here,” Bayern captain Manuel Neuer told Amazon Prime.

“The luck in the decisive moments wasn’t on his side – and that became our luck.

“With his volley (in the 19th minute) we had a little bit of luck that it went over the crossbar… but I think we showed a really good defensive performance.”

Nagelsmann told the media after the game he hoped the victory would mean the end of questions about Lewandowski.

“He played a good game. From our point of view, I’m happy that he didn’t score – but I think we saw he was dangerous.”

“After the game, I saw him and I hugged him, but he plays for a different club and I have different players I need to look out for.

“This week I had 65 questions on Lewandowski. You can ask those questions to Xavi now because he’s not my player anymore.”

Barcelona’s 19-year-old midfielder Pedri said Bayern made his side pay for failing to take their chances.

“It was a tricky game,” he told Movistar+.

“This result doesn’t tell the true story. Our first half display merited much more than 0-0 at half time,” he said.

“We had opportunities to go ahead, but if you miss against a big team like Bayern, you end up paying for it.

“But of course, if you fail to put chances away against a big rival like Bayern you’ll end up paying.

“They went ahead from our marking mistake at the corner. But it’s time to get on with things now – and to remember that we produced a very good first half.”

Bayern travels to Camp Nou for the return fixture on October 26th.
