Champions League: Chelsea destroy Juve, Barcelona close to exit

Barcelona produced an impressive display on the pitch, but they failed to deliver the finishing touch to their chances and pick up a much-needed win against Benfica. 

The goalless draw leaves Barcelona second in Group E, but they will have to win against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in the final matchday to confirm a round-of-16 spot. 

However, the Blaugrana will go through to the next round regardless of their result against Bayern if Benfica lose against Dynamo Kyiv.

Chelsea on fire

Defending champions Chelsea progressed to the next stage of the competition in emphatic style as they steamrolled Juventus 4-0 and avenged their 1-0 defeat to the Bianconeri in the previous tie. 

Trevor Chalobah, Reece James, and Callum Hudson-Odoi gave the hosts a 3-0 lead before the hour mark.

Timo Werner scored the fourth in stoppage time. 

Bayern Munich had to field a second-string team against Dynamo Kyiv because of covid regulations, but that did not stop the Bavarians from returning from the Ukrainian capital with all three points. 

Robert Lewandowski and Kingsley Coman gave Bayern a 2-0 cushion before halftime.

Denys Garmash pulled one back in the 70th minute to set up a nervy end to the match. But, Bayern saw out the phase and sealed a 2-1 victory.

Sevilla nail vital win

Sevilla remained in pursuit of a knockout stage spot with a 2-0 victory at home over VfL Wolfsburg. 

Joan Jordan and Rafa Mir scored the goals for the Andalusian side at opposite ends of the match. 

As things stand, all four Group G teams are in contention for a round-of-16 pass since only three points separate toppers Lille from bottom-placed Wolfsburg.

Zenit St Peterburg narrowly avoided defeat as the Russians equalized from a late penalty against Swedish giants Malmo. 

Soren Rieks grabbed the lead for Malmo in the 28th minute, and Dmitri Chistyakov’s red card four minutes from stoppage time tipped the balance further towards the Swedes. 

But, in a dramatic turn of events, Rieks gave away a penalty fouling Artem Dzubya inside the penalty box. 

Yaroslav Rakitskiy kept his calm and converted the golden opportunity to salvage a valuable point for Zenit.

Lille are going through a rough patch in Ligue 1, but their European form has been contrastingly better this season. 

The French side climbed to the top of Group G with a 1-0 win over RB Salzburg. 

Jonathan David scored the decisive goal in the 31^st minute. Salzburg are currently second in the group with seven points, a point less than Lille. 

Zapata shines for Atalanta

Atalanta and Young Boys played out the most entertaining match of the night as Luis Muriel snatched a late equalizer to deny Young Boys a 3-2 win. 

After 80 minutes, the score stood at 2-1 in favour of the Serie A side. But, quick strikes from Vincent Sierro and Silvan Hefti turned the match around. 

Earlier, Duvan Zapata put the visitors ahead before Jordan Pefok restored parity. 

Jose Luis Palomino made it 2-1 in the 51st minute, and the scores remained that way until the 10-minute, high-octane finale.
