Top 3 bowling spells in T20 World Cups

T20 cricket is all about hitting and every batsman is trying to score quick runs from the very first bowl they face. 

T20 cricket is not supposed as a bowler friendly format especially in modern day cricket but at the same time it checks the bowler’s abilityhow he bowls under pressure.

We have seen a lot of fantastic bowling spells in T20 cricket that destroyed the batting line ups.

Today we are going to discuss the top 3 most fiery and outstanding spells in the history of T20 world cups

1.Ajantha Mendis 6 wickets for 8 runs (Sri Lanka) 

The right arm off-spinner from Sri Lanka bowled a record breaking spell against Zimbabwe in the 2012 T20 world cup. 

In a group match of the tournament played in Hambantota on 18 September 2012. Sri Lankan team batted first and they scored a brilliant total of 182/4. 

In reply, Zimbabwe’s batting line up was demolished due to the destructive bowling from Ajantha Mendis.

They were bowled out for just 100 runs in 17.3 overs. The right arm off-spin bowler  took 6 wickets for 8 runs in 4 overs including the wickets  of B.Taylor, H.Mazakadza, E.Chigumbura, Sibanda , Utseya and  Kyle Jarvis. 

In the route, Mendis even broke his own world record that he made against Australia in August 2011 by picking up 6 wickets for 16 runs

2. Rangana Herath 5 wickets for 3 runs (Sri Lanka) 

In our list, on the second number there is another Sri Lankan spinner, Rangana Herath.

The left arm slow orthodox bowler bowled a brilliant spell against the New Zealand team in a group match of the 2014 T20 world cup.

The match was played in Chattogram on 31 march 2014.

The Sri Lankan team batted first and they were bowled out  but on a very good score of 199 with still 4 balls left in the innings. 

When the New Zealand team came to bat with an approach to chase that big total but they were just outclassed by the un-playable bowling spell from Rangana Herath.

He took 5 wickets for just 3 runs in his 3.3 overs.

The New Zealand batting line up was unable to play him and the whole team was dismissed for just 60 runs in 15.3 overs.

Sri Lanka registered an easy win due to his spectacular performance with the ball.

 3. Umar Gul 5 wickets for 6 runs (Pakistan)

The Pakistani Yorker specialist Umar Gul produced an almost unbelievable bowling spell against New Zealand.

Pakistan faced the Black Caps in the 18th match of the 2009 T20 World Cup in London.  

The Black Caps  batted first and they were just cleaned up for 99 runs in 18.3 overs.

Pakistani pace star Umar Gul bowled a memorable spell, he took 5 wickets for just 6 runs in 3 overs.

The New Zealand batters have no clue for his astonishing spell.

He demolished the whole New Zealand batting line up by picking up wickets of the major New Zealander batsman including the big wickets of Scott Styris,  Nathan McCullum, James Franklin, Peter McGlashan and Kyle Mills. 

When Pakistan came to bat chasing a very low total of 100 runs, they comfortably  chased down the small target in just 13.1 overs with 6 wickets in hand.

That was in fact the record for the best bowling figures in T20 cricket at that time . He has done this twice in his career when he took 5 wickets for 6 runs against South Africa earlier.
