Tokyo 2020: India have a poor day

It was a disappointing day for the Indian athletes at the Tokyo Games on Monday.

Swimming

Sajan Prakash failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the men’s 200m butterfly event.

Sajan finished at fourth place in 1:57.22 seconds in Heat 2 of the event.

The Indian swimmer finished 24th overall and failed to make the cut as the top 16 qualified for the next round.

On Sunday, young Indian swimmers Srihari Nataraj and Maana Patel failed to qualify for the 100m backstroke semi-finals of the showpiece event.

Srihari recorded a time of 54.31 seconds in men’s 100m backstroke Heat 3.

The young swimmer finished fifth in Heat 3 but 27th overall.

Earlier this month, Maana Patel became the first Indian female swimmer to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

Hockey

The women’s hockey team lost 0-2 to Germany.

This was India’s second straight loss in Pool A following a 5-1 hammering at the hands of the Netherlands.

The loss leaves India at the bottom of Pool A.

Boxing

Ashish Kumar Chaudhary was knocked out in the Round of 32 when he lost his bout against Erbieke Tuoheta of China in the men’s Middle (69-75kg) category.

Tennis

Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal was knocked out in the men’s singles event as he lost his second round match against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.

Table Tennis

Indian star Manika Batra exited after losing her women’s singles third round match to Sofia Polcanova of Austria in straight games.

However, veteran Sharath Kamal claimed a 4-2 win against Portugal’s Tiago Apolonia in Round 2 of the men’s singles table tennis event.

Archery

The Indian archery team of Atanu Das, Pravin Jadhav and Tarundeep Rai lost in the quarterfinals of the men’s team event, going down 0-6 to South Korea.

The Indian team had raised hopes after defeating Kazakhstan 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals, but the Koreans were superior by a distance.

Badminton

The Indian duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost their men’s doubles badminton match in straight games, 21-13 21-12, against the Indonesian pair of Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.

Fencing

Indian fencer Bhavani Devi was knocked out by France’s Manon Brunet 7-15 in Women’s Sabre Individual Table Of 32.

Shooting

In men’s shooting – Skeet Men’s Qualification – Angad Vir Singh Bajwa (Rank 18) and Mairaj Ahmad Khan (Rank 25) failed to qualify for the final.
