Three highest team totals in ODI World Cup history
South Africa has created history in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 game against Sri Lanka in Delhi. In the ongoing game, the 1996 winners won the toss and elected to bowl first. Apart from skipper Temba Bavuma’s wicket on the score of 10, the former champions were made to rue the decision. The likes of Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram made centuries and it became a record. They also created a record for getting the highest team total in ODI World Cup history.
The Proteas have been performing brilliantly in the ongoing tournament as the batters once again stood up and smashed the 6th highest total in the history of the ODI World Cup. In the 20th match of the ODI World Cup 2023, South Africa smashed 399 runs in the first innings.
The four-time semifinalists have had a rich history in the WCs but have never won the title. On the other hand, they have managed to break the old records that have been in place for some time. In this listicle, we will discuss the top three highest team totals in the tournament’s history.
Top three team totals in ODI World Cup history
- South Africa against Sri Lanka
In the ongoing fourth game of the World Cup 2023. the Lankan Lions won the toss and elected to bowl first. After the initial overs, the Lions regretted the decision. Apparently, with Quinton de Kock and Rassei van Der Dussen scoring a century each, the team had a great platform.
With Aiden Markram scoring the fastest WC hundred and David Miller playing a cameo, the Proteas reached a record total of 428/5 at the end of the innings. At the time of writing, the Green Brigade is set to win the game as they have picked five wickets for 166 runs.
2. Australia against Afghanistan
Eight years back, Australia, who never scored 400 runs in World Cups at least, took apart the then-WC debutants. The Asian side won the toss and elected to bowl first. However, just like Sri Lanka in the ongoing game, the Afghans were made to rethink their decision.
With David Warner hitting his highest ODI score at that point, i.e 178, it laid a great platform. Even though the others such as Steve Smith (95) and Glenn Maxwell (88) failed to get the ton, they helped the team reach a massive total of 417/6. In the end, they won the game by 275 runs.
3. India vs Bermuda
In what was a dreadful World Cup for the Men In Blue, India in 2007 (after 1979), they managed to get a 400-plus total for the first time in the tournament. After losing to an inexperienced Bangladesh side, India needed to win against minnows, Bermuda. They got to 413/5 with Virender Sehwag (114) scoring a hundred.
Apart from him, Sourav Ganguly (89), Yuvraj Singh (83), and Sachin Tendulkar (57*) contributed to the cause. In the end, they won the game by 257 runs. However, the team lost to Sri Lanka in the game and crashed out in the first round.
