Former England captain Michael Vaughan has stirred controversy with his recent comments, suggesting that the Indian cricket team has not lived up to its potential despite the talent and resources at its disposal. Vaughan expressed his views during a Fox Sports panel discussion at the MCG, questioning India’s underachievement in global tournaments over the past decade.

Pointing to India’s lack of global trophies in the last ten years, Vaughan labelled them as an underachieving side. He initiated a conversation with former Australian batsman Mark Waugh, asking, “Do you think, in terms of cricket, India is one of the most underachieving sports teams in the world?”

While acknowledging India’s recent Test series victories in Australia as “magnificent,” Vaughan underscored their shortcomings in major tournaments, particularly the World Cups. Despite India’s success in Test cricket, Vaughan argued that their underperformance in global white-ball competitions raises questions about their ability to convert talent into silverware.

“They have been nowhere,” says Michael Vaughan

“They’ve won in Australia twice (test series in 2018/19 and 2020/21). Magnificent. But in the last few World Cups, they have been nowhere; in the last few T20 World Cups, they have been nowhere,” remarked Vaughan.

Despite praising India as a good team with abundant talent, Vaughan emphasised that, given their resources and skill set, they should have achieved more. He highlighted the disparity between India’s success in bilateral series and their performance in multinational events, suggesting that the team’s potential hasn’t translated into significant tournament victories.

Vaughan’s comments have sparked discussions about the expectations placed on the Indian cricket team and whether their recent achievements in Test cricket outweigh the perceived underperformance in limited-overs formats. As opinions diverge, the scrutiny of India’s approach to global tournaments intensifies, with fans and experts closely watching the team’s future performances on the international stage.
