T20 World Cup 2007 winner names next India skipper after Rohit Sharma

Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa has named the next India skipper in ODI cricket after Rohit Sharma‘s retirement from the game. At this point, the latter is 36 years old and is unlikely to play the next World Cup in 2027. Also, he hasn’t been playing the T20I format since the T20 World Cup 2022. Also, this is highly unlikely for Sharma to play the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA.

The two-time World Event winner is likely to take retirement from white-ball in the near future. The recently concluded ODI World Cup 2023 was considered to be Rohit’s last tournament. While the team had a great run with 10 wins including the semifinal win against New Zealand. However, when the team needed the most, they failed to turn up in the final against Australia and once again their World Cup dream was shattered.

Shreyas Iyer can replace Rohit Sharma as captain: Robin Uthappa

Meanwhile, the T20 World Cup 2007 winner has said that Shreyas Iyer can replace Sharma as the captain in ODI cricket. However, Uthappa said that despite the Iyer’s issues against the short-pitched bowling, he can deliver for the team in the future.

“Whatever was said about his issues with the short ball, he has shown he has put in a lot of hard work and he seems to be confident as well. He looks very very good. He looks very good at No.4. If he continues to perform this way, I won’t be surprised if he becomes the captain of the Indian side. Especially in white-ball cricket,” said Uthappa on his YouTube Channel.

Notably, Iyer played his first ODI World Cup, having missed out in the 2019 that was played in England.
