Australia’s Glenn Maxwell slammed the fastest ODI World Cup century in the game against the Netherlands on Wednesday, October 25. It was an absolute carnage at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi as the right-hander took just 40 balls to reach the milestone. On the back of Maxwell’s carnage and David Warner’s brilliant hundred, Australia posted a massive total of 399 in 50 overs.

Warner laid the foundations with his second consecutive century and it was complemented by half-centuries from Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. The Dutch bowlers pulled it back in the middle phase with 3 wickets in 19 balls. Australia were 290/6 in 42.2 overs with Maxwell being the only recognised batter in the middle. The Netherlands could have hoped to restrict Australia to a total of 330-340, but Maxi had some other plans.

The all-rounder displayed ruthless batting as he smashed the Dutch bowlers around the park. He brought up his first fifty off 26 balls and the second in just 14 balls! On closer inspection, Maxwell reached his half-century in 46.2 overs and reached the triple-figure mark in 48.4 overs. The 48th and 49th overs went for 21 and 28 runs respectively.

Usually, batters slow down from their 80s to 100, but Maxwell took just 4 balls. The 49th over was bowled by Dutch all-rounder Bas de Leede and it went for 4,4,6,6,6. The right-hander dedicated his century to his newborn baby Logan Maverick Maxwell in a heartwarming gesture. His celebration soon went viral on social media.

Earlier, South Africa‘s Aiden Markram scored the fastest World Cup century against Sri Lanka. In their first match of the 2023 edition, South Africa registered the highest-ever score in ODIs on the back of three centuries by their top-order batters. Markram’s innings was similar to Maxwell’s innings which eventually fueled South Africa’s score. The Proteas batter took 49 balls to complete his century. Interestingly, both the record-breaking knocks were featured at the same ground – the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
