SunRisers Hyderabad on Thursday named South Africa batter Aiden Markram as their captain for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The franchise confirmed the development on Thursday on its official Twitter account.

SRH were enthused after Markram led SRH’s sister franchise, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, to the inaugural SA 20 title recently.

Notably, last season, Markram was a key performer for SRH – he had scored 381 runs for in 12 innings at an impressive strike rate of 139.05.

He averaged 47.62 for the side, smashing three fifties in the season.

Even though SRH finished eighth in the table, Markram was a bright spot.

SRH will also begin a new era in the IPL, having let go of stalwarts Kane Williamson and David Warner in the past couple of seasons.

Interestingly, SRH were spoilt for choices for the captaincy role, with their new recruit Mayank Agarwal emerging as a potential candidate.

Mayank had led Punjab Kings in the previous season of the tournament but SRH kept their faith on Markram.

The side was led by Kane Williamson in the 2022 season but released the New Zealand star ahead of the auction for this year’s tournament.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was also considered by many people as a candidate; he had led the Sunrisers in select matches throughout his time in the Hyderabad franchise.

The Sunrisers will begin their IPL campaign on April 2 against Rajasthan Royals.

During the IPL auction earlier this year, Sunrisers opted for England’s Harry Brook(Rs 13.25 crore), India’s Mayank Agarwal (8.25 crore), and South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen (5.25 crore).
