SRH are set to appoint a new skipper for the IPL 2024. Reports claim that Pat Cummins is set to replace Aiden Markram as the new captain of the franchise. Following the result in the final of the ODI WC 2023, Cummins is regarded as the best captain in the globe. SRH is trying to capitalize on the same for the 17th edition of the league.

Under Cummins, Australia had a brilliant run in recent times. In 2022, Australia won the Test series in Pakistan for the first time in years. Australia then retained the Ashes in 2023 by drawing the series 2-2 in England. Under Cummins, Australia won the WTC final 2023 against India. But the biggest prize of them all was the win in the ODI WC 2023.

Australia beat the favourites and the home side, India, in the most decisive match in their own backyard. In front of a crowd of over 93000, Australia lifted their sixth world title. These are great feats for a captain. No wonder why SRH is looking to make him the new captain. For the same reason, SRH paid him over INR 20 crores in the auction. It is interesting to see how he would perform in SRH.

Aiden Markram equally good as captain

It is worth wondering if Cummins would be really needed in SRH as the captain. Over the past few seasons, SRH has seen a lot of changes in the leadership. In 2021, Warner was their skipper for the first half and Bhuvneshwar led them in the second half. Kane Williamson was their skipper in the IPL 2022. Aiden Markram became their full-time captain in the IPL 2023.

Markram as a captain has been good too. He won South Africa their maiden Under 19 World Cup in 2014. Under him, Sunrisers Eastern Cape has managed to win two consecutive SA20 seasons. The owners would be aware of the fact and think twice before changing the captain. There is an opinion that Markram is a tactically better captain than the Australian, which is important to lead a T20 side.
