Bollywood veteran actress Deepika Padukone found herself at the centre of online trolling after candidly discussing her dating life before settling down with Ranveer Singh in the augural episode of the popular talk show ‘Koffee With Karan 8’. The actress revealed that she went on dates with other men even after meeting Ranveer, emphasising they weren’t a couple at the time.

However, this admission sparked backlash on social media. Coming to her defence, Bollywood personality Twinkle Khanna has spoken out in support of Deepika, highlighting the importance of allowing individuals the freedom to explore relationships without judgment. Khanna’s stance underscores the need for empathy and understanding in the face of internet scrutiny.

“On Koffee with Karan, Deepika managed to outrage uncles, aunties, and an entire lot of India’s not-so-eligible bachelors by confessing that, unlike her reel self, she did not swoon and fall at the feet of the first moustached suitor hanging around her. Instead, she had dated other men while also dating her future husband. The trolling she has received because of her admission is baffling.

In fact, it has gone as far as students at Banaras Hindu University reportedly putting on a play where a girl plays Deepika and male students act as her past boyfriends. Twinkle was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times. Her approach to finding a suitable partner though is rather logical.” Twinkle was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

You are expected to just pick one without testing out alternatives: Deepika Padukone

Twinkle humorously highlights the irony in societal expectations, comparing the careful consideration given to choosing a couch to the seemingly arbitrary selection of a life partner. Deepika‘s call for informed choices aims to rescue women from potential marital missteps.

“Suppose you want to buy a couch, wouldn’t you go to the store to figure out which one feels nice and bouncy, which has a comfortable backrest and which fabric doesn’t make your skin itch? But when it comes to the couch potato whom you have to snuggle against, you are expected to just pick one without testing out alternatives. Deepika’s idea of making an informed choice may save a lot of women from marrying dogs, and more commonly, frogs in princely robes,” she said.
