‘Satyaprem Ki Katha’ director talks about ‘Patriarchy’, reveals how Kiara Advani interacted with some rape survivors

The movie “Satyaprem Ki Katha,” starring Bollywood stars Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani, may soon be pulled from the big screens since it is barely making any money. Just Rs 80 crore has been made by the movie so far at the box office. Given the success of films like Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Mission Impossible 7 on the big screen, breaking the Rs 100 crore barrier doesn’t seem possible for the movie.

Meanwhile, Sameer Vidwans, who directed Satyaprem Ki Katha, has tried to leave a message in society regarding the awareness of women’s security. Sameer said, through this movie, he wants sensitive men to support women who are fighting with the patriarchal mindset of society.

“This is a story of a feminist husband. Women have to fight for their rights because society is quite patriarchal. And if we want to deal with a patriarchal society, then men need to have sensitivity. With our film, we have given a kind of husband who says, ‘You go and become the hero, I will be the supporting character of your story.

“(But) I think the critics missed out on the dialogue where Sattu says, ‘I will be the supporting character of your story.’ He says it twice in the movie. He doesn’t say that I will save you and become a hero. But he says that you have to become the hero, and I will provide the support,” Sameer was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

Sameer also revealed that Kiara remembered her experience from the 2020 movie Guilty during which she got to interact with a lot of rape survivors. The interaction and experience helped her to adjust to the script of Satyaprem Ki Katha.

“At that time, she had interacted with a lot of rape survivors. She remembered that experience when she started working on this movie. She said she could understand the thought process of rape survivors because of her interactions with them.

“We wanted a natural performance from her and she was on the same page. It could’ve gone into a melodramatic zone or become superficial but we avoided that. We wanted to explore the character in detail and she has done a very good job with it,” he added.
