The Indian Cricket team faced a significant setback in the latter stages of the recently concluded ODI World Cup 2023 due to the absence of star all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Hardik participated in only four matches during the tournament and sustained an injury in India’s clash against Bangladesh.

The injury occurred as he twisted his ankle while attempting to stop the ball during his follow-through. Immediate hospitalisation and scans followed, and initial reports suggested a two-match rest for Hardik. However, the Indian Cricket Board later delivered a shocking announcement, confirming Hardik’s complete exclusion from the remainder of the tournament.

Hardik’s unavailability proved to be a crucial factor in India’s heart-wrenching 6-wicket loss to Australia in the World Cup final. His dual contribution with both bat and ball was sorely missed in the decisive match. Currently, Hardik is in the recovery phase, and any hopes of his comeback are ruled out until January of the following year.

Suryakumar Yadav appointed as India’s captain for T20I series against Australia

Recent reports indicate that the acclaimed all-rounder is slated to stage his comeback in the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year, expected to kick off towards the end of March. However, this news has not resonated well with fans, who express discontent and perceive it as a sign that players prioritise financial gains over national commitment.

The upcoming 5-match T20I series against Australia, commencing on November 23, will see India without the services of Hardik and Rohit Sharma. Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as the captain in their absence, with Hardik’s recurrent injuries rendering him unsuitable for the leadership role.

Looking ahead, India is scheduled to engage in a five-match Test series against England, commencing on January 25 and concluding on March 7. Owing to his susceptibility to injuries, Hardik is no longer a part of India’s red-ball squad. Consequently, even if he achieves fitness by February, his prospects of returning to professional cricket during that series are minimal.
