CPL 2021: Royals crush Guyana Warriors
Barbados Royals have marched on to another victory in the Caribbean Premier League 2021, beating Guyana Amazon Warriors by 45 runs.
Mayers bags MOTM trophy
The Royals did a fabulous job in the first innings to set up a tricky total of 185/8.
Courtesy openers Kyle Mayers and Johnson Charles’ opening stand, the Royals were off to a fiery start that kept the Warriors’ bowlers in check throughout the opening spell.
Mayers bagged Man of the Match for his 20-ball 36.
He was sent back to the hut by Romario Shepherd whereas his partner Charles departed for 40 after veteran Pakistan spinner Mohammad Hafeez got him caught to his national teammate Shoaib Malik.
Philips, Holder deliver the sucker punch
Later, it was a Glenn Phillips masterclass that propelled Barbados to a humongous total.
His 44 runs at the end made the difference alongside a blistering cameo of captain Jason Holder.
Being an all-format specialist, Holder carried on his good form into this clash.
He struck two huge sixes and two fours to register a 7-ball 22 at the death overs.
Warriors start slow
The difference between the two sides was visible in their starts. While the Royals never stopped accelerating from the powerplay, the Amazon Warriors had a relatively different approach.
Brandon King departed for 5 and Chandrapaul Hemraj, who just rose to fame for his century, returned to the dressing room for 12.
Hafeez stayed for a bit (30) but he lacked support from the other end.
Odean Smith’s addition of 43 was too little too late. In the end, it was too much for the Warriors’ tail to manage with the bat.
Barbados Royals 185 for 8 (Phillips 44, Charles 40, Shepherd 3-31) beat Guyana Amazon Warriors 140 (Smith 43, Young 3-24) by 45 runs.
Russell gets MOTM as Tallawahs defeat Patriots
Rovman Powell added another feather in his cap as the Tallawahs skipper on Wednesday.
The West Indian steamrolled through Chris Gayle and co to defeat the Patriots by 22 runs.
Gayle was the stand-in skipper, replacing Dwayne Bravo, in this match.
Powell’s men managed to defeat the table-toppers in the 21st game of the Caribbean Premier League.
Batting first, Kennar Lewis and Kirk McKenzie failed to capitalize on good starts.
Shamarh Brooks then took the game a notch.
His 43 and Powell’s 37 made the Patriot’s bowling unit second guess their tactics.
Andre Russell also chipped in 28 on 17 balls to take the side to set up the 170-run target.
Devon Thomas seemed to be the lone powerhouse during the chase.
He was forced to build his innings slowly because he kept on losing his partners from the other end.
After he departed at 35 (36), none of the Patriots’ batter extended their stay.
Despite having a mediocre total in sight, a batting line-up as strong as the Pats had a sluggish outing.
Ravi Bopara (6) and Fabian Allen (18) failed to turn up with their A-game. Despite the loss, the Pats are top of the table with 10 points in hand.
Jamaica Tallawahs 169 for 8 (Brooks 43, Ahmed 2-14) beat Saint Kitts and Nevis Patriots 147 for 8 (Thomas 35, Pretorius 3-26) by 22 runs.
