Euro 2020: Ronaldo’s brilliance sinks Hungary

Portugal were the favourites but Hungary made them wait till the very end.

But once, Portugal made the breakthrough with Raphael Guerreiro’s deflected effort wrong-footing Peter Gulacsi in the 85th minute, the goals started flowing.

Ronaldo doubled the lead from the spot two minutes later after Willi Orban pulled back Rafa Silva.

But Ronaldo still wasn’t done.

Showing twinkling footwork, he danced round the Hungary defence and Gulacsi to grab his second and Portugal’s third in injury time.

Szabolcs Schön’s 80th-minute goal for Hungary was ruled offside.

Both Ronaldo and Diogo Jota missed a few chances in front of goal in the first half.

It was a day when Ronaldo broke multiple records.

He became the first player to appear in five European Championships.

He overtook Michel Platini’s tally of nine goals with a clinical penalty three minutes from time.

With his second goal of the match, he took his national goal tally to 106, which is just three less than Iranian striker Ali Daei’s world record.

Ronaldo also became the oldest player to score for Portugal at a major tournament (World Cup & Euros), aged 36 years and 130 days.

Also, Portugal became the first team in the history of the European Championships to score three goals in the final 10 minutes of a game.
