Rahul Dravid provides Shubman Gill’s health update ahead of India’s ODI World Cup 2023 opening match
Indian star opener Shubman Gill’s availability for the ODI World Cup 2023 opener against Australia this Sunday is in question due to an illness. Gill, who has delivered exceptional performances in the ODI format this year, is currently under careful observation as India gets ready to start their campaign in Chennai.
The star opener has amassed an impressive 1,230 runs from 20 matches with an average of 72.35. However, the 24-year-old batter has reported positive for Dengue. Meanwhile, India’s head coach Rahul Dravid has recently provided an update on Gill’s health. While Dravid didn’t confirm whether the young opener would be ready to play against Australia, he also didn’t entirely rule out the possibility of Gill being involved.
“He’s feeling better today and the medical team is monitoring him on a day-to-day basis. We will take a call on him later. The medical team hasn’t ruled him out yet. We’ll see how he feels the day after tomorrow.” Dravid was quoted as saying by Cricket Addictor.
We are here to support the vision of the captain: Rahul Dravid
The Indian team’s head coach also addressed the importance of the support staff’s role, highlighting that the main duty of coaches is to back the players and adhere to the captain’s vision. Rahul Dravid further noted that teams must be prepared to adapt to diverse conditions during the World Cup in India and successfully implement their plans to clinch victory in the tournament.
“The job of the support staff, and coach is to support the players and captain. And that’s what I am going to do in the next couple of months. Once the players cross the boundary line, it’s all on them. Our job is mainly in the lead-up to the tournament. We are here to support the vision of the captain.” he added.
“I don’t think this World Cup will be decided on how well you read the pitches but how well you play and execute their plans. Teams will have to adapt to different conditions, teams, pitches.” Dravid said.
