Racism continues to be a major problem in Spanish football.

One of the most gruesome and shameful incidents occurred just before the Copa del Rey quarter-final match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

A mannequin wearing the shirt of Vinicius Junior, a Brazilian player on the Real Madrid team, was hung by the neck from a bridge.

Alongside the mannequin, a banner was also hung, featuring the colors of Atletico Madrid and bearing the words “Madrid consumes Real.”

The La Liga, the top professional football division in Spain, issued a statement condemning the act and calling for a full investigation to find those responsible.

The statement also highlighted that racism and violence have no place in football and that the league would be pushing for the harshest criminal sanctions possible.

This isn’t the first time that Vinicius has been targeted with racist abuse.

In September, when the two Madrid teams last faced off, footage captured outside the stadium showed fans chanting “Vinicius is a monkey” and there were further monkey chants when he touched the ball for the first time during the game.

The 22-year-old has previously spoken out about the racist abuse he has faced as a footballer.

Despite the racist attacks, Vinicius was in great form during the match and eventually scored a goal in Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid manager Ancelotti stated that Vinicius was focused on the game and that the racist attack did not affect his performance.

In fact, sections of the Real Madrid supporters were heard singing in support of Vinicius Junior before the match and even during the match.

After the Brazilian capped Real’s victory with a fine solo goal in the 121st minute, he posted on Twitter saying, “Vini LOVES MADRID”.

It is disappointing to see such hateful and discriminatory behavior still prevalent in the sport of football.

Racism has no place in any aspect of society, and it is important for everyone to stand together to combat it.

It is heartening to see Vinicius and the support he received from his team and fans, who united to show that love and respect always triumph over hate.
