Former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram had a sarcastic take on his national side’s semifinal qualification in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. Ahead of the New Zealand vs Sri Lanka match, Pakistan needed the Lankan Lions to win. After all, the difference between the Blackcaps and Shaheens in terms of NRR was quite huge. Apart from this, the 1996 winners needed to win to keep their Champions Trophy 2025 qualification alive.

However, batting first, the Lankans were bowled out for 171 runs. In reply, the two-time finalists, NZ needed to win by the biggest margin as much as possible. Despite losing five wickets, they managed to win the game with 26.4 overs to spare. With this, the 1992 winners need to win by a massive margin.

As per the scenarios explained by ESPNcricinfo “Pakistan has to win by at least 287 or, assuming England are kept to 150, chase down the target in 3.4 overs.” Neither of the scenarios looks like happening as these are unrealistic tasks.

Meanwhile, after the Blackcaps’ win against Sri Lanka, A Sports, the broadcaster of the tournament in Pakistan, analyzed the game and the scenario. During the show, host Fakhar-E-Alam revealed that Akram has said that Pakistan must bat first against England

“Wasim bhai gave the idea that Pakistan should bat first, then lock England up in their dresing room and get them timed out in 20 minutes to win the match,” the host said, leaving the guests in splits.

Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who was also one of the experts on the show, had an even better idea: “Allow England to bat first and lock up the dressing room after that. Why let them put up a total at all!”
England and Pakistan will play each other on November 11. While the Three Lions are out of the tournament, Pakistan has a bare chance.
