PSL 2024: Any chance for Lahore Qalandars to qualify for playoffs? Let’s examine possible scenarios

Lahore Qalandars entered the ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as favourites, but are now in dire straits. The champions of the last two seasons were expected to dominate this time around as well, but they have had a disastrous campaign so far. Having lost all of their six matches played so far, Qalandars are currently at the bottom of the points table.

They started the 2024 season with an 8-wicket loss to Islamabad United in the tournament opener. Their last defeat was against Multan Sultans at the Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday, February 27. Thrashed by 60 runs, Qalandars remained the only team yet to open their account in this edition.

The tournament has entered its sixth round and Shaheen Shah Afridi and Co. are left scratching their heads as to how they will make it to the playoffs from this situation. Wait, is there a comeback for them or is it the end of the road? Considering the current scenario and their dismal form, it will be difficult for them to finish the league stage in the top four. However, Qalandars still have a slim chance of qualifying if they are ready to bring out their best in the upcoming matches.

Here’s how Qalandars can still qualify for the PSL 2024 playoffs

Each team will play 10 matches in the league stage, meaning Qalandars have four more games to rise from the ashes. They have to win all the remaining encounters by huge margins. But that alone is not enough. They have to pray for other teams to crumble under pressure in their respective matches.

Fourth-placed Karachi Kings and fifth-placed Islamabad United are relatively weak and Qalandars can target any of their spots. Shaheen Afridi‘s side will have to hope for more wins by the end of the league phase or win a three-way tie in the NRR after 8 points with Karachi and Islamabad.

Qalandars’ next fixture is against Peshawar Zalmi on Saturday (March 2). This will be followed by games against Islamabad United (March 6), Karachi Kings (March 9) and Quetta Gladiators (March 10).
