EPL Preview: Man City vs Arsenal

The upcoming match between Arsenal and Manchester City in the 2022-23 Premier League season is highly anticipated, as it could potentially determine the winner of the title.

Although both teams have been consistently strong this season, Arsenal’s poor track record against Manchester City could hinder their chances of winning their first league title since 2003-04.

In fact, Arsenal has lost their last 11 Premier League matches against Manchester City, making it their longest losing streak against a single opponent in the league’s history.

The aggregate score over their last six Premier League trips to the Etihad Stadium during Pep Guardiola’s reign as manager has been 17-3 in favor of Manchester City, with Arsenal failing to score on seven occasions.

Despite being a former assistant to Guardiola at Manchester City, Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta has failed to beat them in his six Premier League games.

Furthermore, Arsenal has only scored three goals in their last ten Premier League games against Manchester City.

Arsenal’s chances of winning the match are further hindered by the absence of William Saliba, Mohamed Elneny, and Takehiro Tomiyasu due to injury, with Granit Xhaka being a doubt.

In contrast, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko, who both won the Premier League title with Manchester City in the previous two seasons, are fit to play against their former club.

Manchester City has won eight of their last nine Premier League games, including their last six in a row, with their home record of winning 17 of their last 19 league games being particularly impressive.

They are undefeated in 16 matches in all competitions, with their last defeat being against Tottenham Hotspur in February.

Their most recent victory saw them defeat Sheffield United 3-0 in the FA Cup semi-final, with Riyad Mahrez scoring a hat-trick.

Arsenal’s recent form has been frustrating, with their hopes of winning the Premier League title taking a hit due to three consecutive score draws.

Their last two away league games against Liverpool and West Ham United saw them take two-goal leads before eventually drawing 2-2, and they drew 3-3 with bottom of the league side Southampton at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night.

Despite this, Arsenal is currently on the longest unbeaten run of any Premier League side, with their last defeat being against Manchester City in February.

Erling Haaland is likely to be Manchester City’s match-winner, having scored 48 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions in the 2022-23 season, a record for a Premier League player in a single season.

He has scored 32 Premier League goals for Manchester City this season, the joint-most ever by a player in a 38-game campaign in the competition.

He has scored 38% of City’s 127 competitive goals in 2022-23, and his 48 goals are only one fewer than their next four highest scorers in 2022-23 combined (Riyad Mahrez’s 15, Julián Álvarez’s 14, Phil Foden’s 13 and Kevin De Bruyne’s seven).

Gabriel Martinelli is Arsenal’s most likely source of goals, having been involved in 11 goals in his last 10 Premier League games for the club.

Overall, he has 15 Premier League goals this season, the joint-most by a Brazilian player in a single campaign, along with Roberto Firmino in 2017-18.

Likely line-ups

Manchester City:
Ederson; Akanji, Dias, Laporte; Stones, Rodri; Mahrez, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Grealish; Haaland

Arsenal:
Ramsdale; White, Holding, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Xhaka, Partey; Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli; Jesus

We say: Manchester City 3-1 Arsenal

Given how crucial Saliba is to Arsenal’s defensive and offensive style, his absence means that things could turn bad for the Gunners on Wednesday night.

We predict a 3-1 win for Man City.
