Players with most centuries in single edition of ODI World Cup
Scoring a hundred is one of the greatest achievements of a batter. If he/she achieves that milestone in a World Cup, the player in his/her portfolio doesn’t need anything else to crack any interview. It is not easy for anyone to perform his best in a high-pressure tournament like the World Cup.
But there have been instances where batters have set the stage on fire with massive scores, outplaying the opposition bowlers. While one century itself seems difficult in World Cups, some have hit two, three, or four, and some have hit those back-to-back!
In this article, we look at the players who have scored the most centuries in a single edition of the ODI World Cup.
3. Quinton de Kock – 4* (2023)
South African opener Quinton de Kock joined the elite list with his scintillating century against New Zealand in Pune on November 1. The southpaw, who is set to retire from ODIs after the 2023 ODI World Cup, equalled Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakarra for four centuries in a single World Cup edition. His four hundreds were as follows: 100(84) vs Sri Lanka, 109(106) vs Netherlands, 174(140) vs Bangladesh and 114(116) vs New Zealand.
2. Kumar Sangakarra – 4 (2015)
Legendary wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Sangakkara is the first player in the history of the ODI World Cup to smash four centuries in a single edition. His fourth century came on 11 March 2015 against Scotland in Hobart. The former Sri Lankan cricketer is the only batter to hit four consecutive centuries in the World Cup (541 runs). His four hundreds were as follows: 105* vs Bangladesh, 117* vs England, 104 vs Australia and 124 vs Scotland.
1. Rohit Sharma – 5 (2019)
The current India captain unleashed his beast mode in 2019 to break Sangakkara’s record for most centuries in a single World Cup edition. During India’s last league match against Sri Lanka on 6 July 2019, Rohit became the first player to score 5 centuries. His five hundreds were as follows: 122* vs South Africa, 140 vs Pakistan, 102 vs England, 104 vs Bangladesh and 103 vs Sri Lanka. The veteran opener accumulated 647 runs in 9 matches.
