Christopher Nolan’s most-awaited film Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Barbie featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will release together in the cinemas on July 21, Friday. The two films are set to clash at the theatres but have enjoyed tremendous hype in India. The advance bookings that were opened for Nolan’s Oppenheimer 10 days prior to the official release on July 11 have already crossed six figures according to the reported figures from three prime multiplex chains – PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis.

At the same time, Barbie, which opened its advance booking very recently has done strongly with more than 16,000 tickets in the opening day itself. Notably, Christopher Nolan was asked in a promo event by one of the reporters present if he’d be watching Barbie. The popular director said a straight-forward ‘No’ with an expression of disinterest. When he was asked to elaborate, he said, “Now, you must know I’m not going to answer that question, only to say those who care about the theatrical experience, we’ve been longing for a crowded marketplace with a lot of different movies. That’s what theaters have now, and those of us who care about movies are thrilled about that.”

Cillian Murphy is more excited about watching Barbie

However, the story is very different in the case of Oppenheimer’s leading actor Cillian Murphy. The Peaky Blinders actor is looking forward to the movie. He said in an interview with IGN, “I mean, I’ll be going to see Barbie, 100 per cent. I can’t wait to see it. I think it’s just great for the industry and for audiences, that we have two amazing films by amazing filmmakers coming out on the same day. You can spend the whole day in the cinema – what’s better than that?”

At the same time, Barbie director Greta Gerwig and lead Margot Robbie were clicked with tickets for Oppenheimer in front of a poster of the movie at a cinema hall. It is really good to see such camaraderie among filmmakers and artists despite the two films competing against each other at the theatres.
