‘Mujhe hairani kyun nahin ho rahi’ – Fans react to Moeen Ali’s startling revelations about Michael Vaughan’s racist behavior
England cricketer Moeen Ali has insisted that former players like Michael Vaughan must step up against racism in cricket. The former has spoken up for the first time after Vaughan made some controversial tweets in 2017.
Totally agree https://t.co/BkBP52XGsP
— Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) May 24, 2017
This tweet became a testimony against the 2005 Ashes-winning skipper when he was charged for his racist comments. Reacting to this tweet, the two-time World Cup winner termed them as ‘dumb’ and ‘silly’ He urged Vaughan to step up for the communities that faced racism in cricket.
“We need people like him to step up for us. As Muslims, or any other faith really. And just be a bit smarter. I think he has also realized that times are changing and he has to change,” Moeen said in a documentary ‘Is Cricket Racist?’, to be aired on Channel 4 in the UK.
British Asians do better in trials but don’t get picked by clubs: Moeen Ali
The all-rounder added that the British Asians are doing better than some native British players. However, despite doing well, as Ali alleges, the native players get preference.
“There’s [British Asian] players out there who are doing better than anyone else,” Moeen says in the documentary. “People won’t sign them for some reason. The South Asian player has to be almost outstanding most of the time, especially as a triallist whereas sometimes a white player doesn’t have to be outstanding, and he is getting signed.”
The left-hander further spoke about Azeem Rafiq’s experiences. The former feels that the game needs to be shaken up for the betterment.
“Obviously sad [for Rafiq’s experiences], but it also felt like the game needed a shake-up,” he said. “The greatest thing that has come out of it for me is that people have a voice now, whereas before people have been very afraid to say anything.”
This is how Twitter reacted
I think Golf, Tennis, Motor Racing and Rugby are far more racist than Cricket. How come you never see a Pakistani male playing those sports? Or are they in episodes 2-5?

What would happen if people are constantly hit with a stick and told they are rasist. At what point does it become counter productive at what point do people shut off and say I sick of being called rasist all the time. What would it take for you to be fully satisfied ? Will you…

Being given a seat at the table does not equate to being accepted as equals.
The jokes, the ‘banter’ and the overwhelming attitude that being non-white makes you automatically inferior is rife in all walks of life, and clearly in cricket. #TimeForChange— Iffat #WhatIff?♥️🕊☮️🇺🇦 (@Iffsi) July 17, 2023
Why are documentaries on this subject always broadcast at ungodly hours? I know people can watch On Demand, record and online, but that needs a certain degree of intention. Put them on before, or after a World Cup match, or TV soap.

This will be a riveting but uncomfortable watch to those of us who played, watched and love the game.
Racism has no place in sport and I for one learnt diversity and inclusion from my time playing cricket. I just wish others has too— Simon Webb (@webby1153) July 17, 2023
Yes, but so is almost every sport/activity. People, the current political climate and our media have a lot to answer for, after emboldening those that feel it's ok to be racist.

As a former cricket club Chairman, I can confirm all the latest findings at Yorks and the ECB. Racist, elitist and sheltered. The ECB also starve the grass roots. They've become fat on the Sky money. I love Moeen. But listen more to those who have been denied. Regards

So we forgave rafiq after he apologised for arguably much worse anti semitic tweets but we need to try and stir up division by creating a program about someone who has also public ally apologised about his tweets?

'Head upside down' 'When's your Kebab shop open' 'Bin Laden'?? Come on. So what. No worse than any words used against white people in your own Asian community
