Meet the new captain of Manchester City
Ilkay Gundogan has been elected Manchester City’s new club captain.
City needed a new captain after the departure of Fernandinho in the summer.
Fernandinho, 37, had captained City for two seasons following the departure of David Silva.
However, the veteran Brazilian midfielder departed for Athletico Paranaense.
Gundogan, 31, has worn the armband in City’s opening two matches of the season.
He was selected on the basis of players-only vote staged by City’s first-team squad.
Kevin De Bruyne, also 31, has become the vice-captain.
De Bruyne took the armband from Gundogan on Saturday after the German was replaced by Bernardo Silva.
The leadership group also comprises Ruben Dias, Kyle Walker, and Rodri.
Gundogan’s tenure as club captain has started positively.
City beat West Ham 2-0 on the opening weekend and downed Bournemouth 4-0 on Saturday.
They currently sit top of the Premier League, ahead of Arsenal on goal difference.
