India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has recently made his comeback in the team. He had trouble since January this year. Ahead of the home series against New Zealand, he was ruled out due to a back injury. Even though he recovered and played three games of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023, the right-hander sustained the injury again during the last game.

This led to Iyer missing the IPL, WTC Final 2023, and other bilaterals. The Mumbaikar was said to have been racing against time to get fit for the continental tournament. However, ahead of the team selection, the Kolkata Knight Riders skipper played an ODI simulation game at the NCA. With not many options to play for, the selectors decided to bring him back to the side.

Meanwhile, ahead of the Asia Cup 2023, the former Delhi Capitals player has hit 199 runs as reported by the Times of India.

“He smashed the bowlers at the National Cricket Academy, scoring 199 in a practice tie. To provide the selectors with more evidence of his fitness, he then fielded for the entire 50 overs of that match, which was held at the Just Cricket Academy in Bangalore 3-4 days back,” a reliable source in the Indian Cricket Board told TOI.

“For the past two months, he has been stationed at the NCA in Bangalore, focusing on his recovery. It’s all come together nicely for him,” the source said.

Shreyas Iyer thanks NCA for his journey towards recovery

Posting a picture on Instagram with NCA medical chief Nitin Patel and trainer Rajnikanth Sivagnanam, Iyer wrote: “Been a long journey but I’m super grateful to the people who stood by my side to help me get to where I am today. Thank you Nitin bhai, Rajni sir & everyone at the NCA, also outside of it, who’ve been tirelessly helping me. Much love and much appreciated.”

India’s Asia Cup will kick off against arch-rivals, Pakistan on September 2.
