Michael Clarke felt that Steve Smith could be a good Test opener for Australia and succeed in the new role. The former Australian captain backed the star batter to step up for the side and act as a replacement for David Warner who recently retired as the opener of Australia. The former Australian batter believed that Smith could be the perfect replacement for Warner.

Clarke thought that Cameron Green might be the like-to-like replacement of the star batter. The former World Cup winner claimed that Australia might be playing Green as the opener in the upcoming days. The former star cricketer did not deny the chances of Smith opening the innings for the side. There has been a void created in Australia with the retirement of the Southpaw.

Clarke further praised Smith for his batting. It was under the captaincy of Clarke that Smith batted up the order. Clarke felt that Smith might be looking for a challenge in Test cricket. The former Australian captain added that Smith might be open to bat for Australia as an opener if he wishes to. Clarke felt that if Smith opened, he would be the best opener in a year.

‘Don’t be surprised if he breaks Brian Lara’s 400 records’ – Michael Clarke

The star cricketer added that one should not be surprised if Smith ends up breaking the 400 record of Brian Lara. “He (Smith) is that good a player. It might be that challenge he’s looking for. If he opens, he will be the best opener within 12 months. Don’t be surprised if he breaks the 400 record of Brian Lara because he’s that good and now he’s got the whole day,” added Clarke in his statement.

Brian Lara is the only batter to have scored 400 runs in a single innings of a Test match. The West Indian batter also remains the only batter to have scored over 500 runs in a single innings of FC cricket. Clarke backed the star batter to break the record of Lara as he believed that Smith was one such batter capable of playing long innings in the middle.
