Manchester United center-back and former club captain Harry Maguire is on the brink of exiting the club. The Athletic reports that an agreement has been reached on principle between United and West Ham with personal terms with the former Leicester star not being a problem. The reported transfer fee is around 30 million pounds.

United have already welcomed three new signing to Old Trafford this summer – Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund, and Mason Mount. With the defender set to leave, United have their eyes on signing defensive reinforcements for the next season. Jean-Clair Todibo of Nice is the frontrunner in Erik Ten Hag’s books. A meeting has already been done with Todibo’s agents. The Manchester United manager has already revealed to Sky Sports that squad depth is his priority this season. The club is also reportedly looking to get rid of Fred, Eric Bailly, and Anthony Elanga.

West Ham were not the only club interested in Harry Maguire

Maguire was put up for sale earlier in the summer with West Ham registering an early interest. They got a bid of 20 million pounds rejected by the Red Devils. However, Maguire wanted to stay and compete for a place in Ten Hag’s team. However, England’s coach Gareth Southgate communicated to him that failing to play regular football for United could impact his place in England’s starting XI. Following this, the idea has been for the defender to be a first-team player in a mid-table Premier League (PL) club, with West Ham fitting the bill perfectly. According to the mirror, Everton were keen on the defender’s services as well and wanted to launch a bid.

The agreement for a transfer fee also rules out the speculated swap deal that would have seen midfielder Amadou Onana leave Goodison Park to head to Old Trafford. Maguire is not the only player at Old Trafford that David Moyes’ side are interested in. Scott McTominay is another possibility. With Declan Rice moving to Arsenal on a statement deal, the Hammers have the required transfer budget to replenish their squad.
