Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the three-match T20I series against South Africa, starting on August 30. He has sustained an ankle injury and with ODI World Cup this year, the team management and selectors have decided not to take any risks. After the T20I series, Maxwell was meant to take a paternal leave for the birth of his first child.

The right-hander has a minor injury and has been replaced by Matthew Wade. The latter recently played for London Spirit in The Hundred Men’s competition. Meanwhile, Cricket Australia selection committee member has said that the Royal Challengers Bangalore player’s injury will be monitored closely.

“We are taking a precautionary approach, given Glenn was heading home next week in any case,” Australia selector Tony Dodemaide said. “We will monitor Glenn’s recovery with a view to him being available for the three-match ODI series in India in advance of the World Cup.”

Matthew Wade was not included in the squad initially

The wicketkeeper batter wasn’t included in the squad initially. Josh Inglis was given a run and Wade was rested for the series. Not to forget, chief selector, George Bailey had said that he was expecting the former Gujarat Titans player to be available for India series post ODI World Cup.

“We do fully expect that [Wade] will come back into this T20 squad for that Indian series post the World Cup,” Bailey said. “This was a great opportunity to give Josh, who’s been on an enormous amount of tours across a number of formats and hasn’t really had much playing-time opportunity.

“Alex Carey is obviously the wicketkeeper in [ODIs], but just making sure that if Josh does get an opportunity through an injury to Alex, that he’s ready to go and he’s got some game time under his belt.”

Wade, who had contemplated international retirement at one point, is now a front runner to travel to West Indies and USA for T20 World Cup 2024.
