IPL: Shami and Tewatia help Gujarat win on debut

Mohammed Shami was the star for Gujarat as he destroyed the top order of Lucknow Super Giants with the new ball.

Rahul Tewatia’s brilliant knock with the bat sealed the victory for the Gujarat Titans in their 1st ever IPL game.

Shami was relentless at the start

Mohammed Shami was outstanding with the new ball against Lucknow Super Giants.

Shami rattled the batting lineup of Lucknow dismissing their skipper and key batter KL Rahul on the very first ball of the match as he got caught behind for a golden duck.

In his second over, Shami get rid of the second opener de Kock, he bowled him out on 7 runs.

Shami didn’t stop here and in his third straight over he bowled out Manish Pandey for only 6 runs.

Varun Aaron supported the relentless Shami with the new ball.

Aaron also picked up an important wicket of the dangerous Evin Lewis in the 4th over of the innings.

Lucknow lost 4 wickets within the powerplay and they were struggling on 32-4 at the end of the powerplay.

Lucknow Super Giants had a horrible first 10 overs in their debut IPL game as they managed to score only 47 runs with the loss of 4 wickets.

An excellent stand between Hooda and Badoni 

After losing some early wickets, Deepak Hooda and the youngster Ayush Badoni rebuilt the innings.

They started slowly but shifted their gears after getting set on the crease.

Both of them scored excellent half-centuries that helped Lucknow to put a decent score on the board.

Deepak Hooda scored 55 runs off 41 deliveries including 2 sixes and 6 fours while Ayush Badoni smashed 54 off 41 balls including 4 fours and 3 sixes.

These two shared 87 runs for the 5th wicket as LSG managed to post 158 runs on the board in their 20 overs.

A bright start from Chameera

There was also not an ideal start to the Gujarat Titans chase as they lost a couple of early wickets.

The Sri Lankan pacer Chameera get rid of Shubman Gill for a duck in his very first over while in his second over Chameera bowled out Vijay Shankar for only 4 runs and Gujarat was struggling on 15-2.

Crucial knocks from Hardik and Wade

The skipper Hardik Pandya joined the opener Mathew Wade to save his side.

Pandya smashed 5 fours and a six in his knock.

Both Pandya and  Wade scored 30 plus runs but they failed to convert their good starts into match-winning knocks as both of them got out in successive overs to leave their side under pressure on 78-4.

The finishing touch

The two finishers of Gujarat Titans David Miller and Rahul Tewatia showed their power-hitting in the final overs to win the game for their side.

Miller smacked 2 sixes and a four before getting out for an impactful  30 runs.

On the other hand, Raul Tewatia remained unbeaten on 40 runs off just 24 deliveries.

He thrashed 5 fours and 2 sixes in his match-winning inning.

Gujarat chased down the target with 2 balls to spare and registered their 1st ever victory in IPL history.
