IPL nuggets: Sehwag criticises Prithvi Shaw for playing stupid shots

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag is upset with Delhi Capitals opener, Prithvi Shaw.

Viru criticised the lack of application shown by Prithvi Shaw, after yet another failed stint on the crease for the Delhi Capitals on Tuesday against the Gujarat Titans.

Sehwag’s ire was directed to the poor decision making of Shaw.

In particular, the one shot that consistently seems to lead to his downfall is the pull shot.

This time, Mohammed Shami delivered a barely short delivery, one which was pulled at by Shaw. But the Mumbai batsman mistimed his shot and the ball ended up being caught by Alzarri Joseph at mid-on.

“He has been dismissed playing those kinds of shots so many times…but he should also learn from his mistakes, right?”, said Sehwag.

“Look at Shubman Gill, who played U-19 cricket with him and is now playing Test, ODIs and T20Is for India, but Shaw is still struggling in IPL. He has to make the most of this IPL platform and score runs.”

“Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 600 odd runs in an IPL season. Shubman Gill also scored big runs. So even Shaw has to be consistent with his IPL scores.” he said.

Shaw’s technique failure was also trolled by Sunil Gavaskar in commentary yesterday.

“Once again that backfoot has done him in, it doesn’t move at all,” was Gavaskar’s assessment of how Shaw’s second innings of the IPL 2023 came apart.

“The backfoot never seemed to move forwards or backwards, nor did it have any of the shift in weight adjustment required to handle that shot.”

Shaw has now scored seven from five balls against Gujarat and could only put together 12 of nine balls against the Lucknow Super Giants on previously.

Time is running out for Shaw and if he doesn’t pull up his socks, he could end up in the wilderness.

The Delhi Capitals and Shaw next face the Rajasthan Royals at the Barsapara Stadium on Saturday, April 8.
