Indian cricket fans are yet to recover from Team India’s heartbreaking defeat in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. However, the past is past and both fans and players need to move on. The focus is slowly shifting to another big extravaganza of Indian cricket – the Indian Premier League. Although the 17th edition of the world’s biggest franchise cricket league will be held next March, the preparations for it have already started.

The deadline for all 10 IPL franchises to declare the list of retained and released players ends today (Sunday, November 26). The pre-auction trading window will also close on the same day. Notably, there have been limited exchanges between the franchises this time around, with West Indies cricketer Romario Shepherd being the first player to be traded. Shepherd was traded to Mumbai Indians (MI) from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for his existing fee of ₹50 lakh.

Later in a swap deal, LSG traded pacer Avesh Khan to Rajasthan Royals (RR) for young batter Devdutt Patikal. All-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed was traded from Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) exchanged Mayank Dagar. There were reports that Gujarat Titans traded their captain Hardik Pandya to MI for an all-cash one-sided deal. However, official confirmation of the biggest trade in the league’s history is yet to come from either franchise.

Notably, Rajasthan Royals confirmed that Joe Root has withdrawn from the tournament. CSK all-rounder Ben Stokes will also not play in the upcoming season, while Dwayne Pretorius is said to have been let go by the franchise. Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have released India all-rounder Shardul Thakur. After all the franchises reveal their final retention list, the next process is the player auction, which will be held on December 19 in Dubai. This is the first time that an IPL auction is being held outside India.

When and where to watch IPL 2024 Retention Day live?
