IPL 2024: Gautam Gambhir takes huge decision about his political future ahead of new season

Former India opening batter and World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir has taken a huge decision involving his political career. The 42-year-old has decided to step back from politics to concentrate on his cricketing commitments.

Gautam Gambhir, who is an MP from New Delhi has asked the BJP to relieve him of his duties. IPL 2024 will witness Gambhir return to the dugout with his former side Kolkata Knight Riders.

For the last two years, Gambhir was associated with the Lucknow Super Giants team. This year the IPL will yet again coincide with the Indian general elections. The first schedule for the tournament was announced last week with CSK taking on RCB in the opening game.

Is Gautam Gambhir set to quit politics?

There is a massive development in sports and politics, and Gautam Gambhir has decided to quit public life. The 42-year-old put out a tweet which early on Saturday morning addressed to the BJP party chief.

“I have requested Hon’ble Party President JP Nadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi for allowing me to serve the people. Jai Hind” wrote Gautam Gambhir.

Kolkata Knight Riders haven’t won the IPL for nearly a decade. It was under Gambhir that they won their last title in 2014 beating Punjab Kings in the finals. The two-time IPL winners have broken the bank to acquire the services of Mitchell Starc for a whopping 24 Crores.

One of the biggest matches for KKR early in the first schedule is against the Royal Challengers Bangalore side. Fans are eagerly waiting for the face-off between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir once again.

The two stars had a massive fight during the LSG vs RCB game during the IPL 2023 season. Shreyas Iyer is also set to return to IPL action after he missed the entire season last year due to injury. The 29-year-old has just lost his contract with the Indian team and will look to bounce back with the bat. It will be interesting to see what the future has on hold for Gautam Gambhir.
