After the conclusion of the ODI World Cup 2023, the senior players are rested for the T20I series against Australia, which is set to start from today, on the 23rd of November. The likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, and several other players are rested after a long season. These players have been continuously playing cricket since the start of the Asia Cup 2023.
Reportedly, Virat and Rohit have personally asked for rest before the Test series in South Africa. The senior players played a key role in India’s win in the Asia Cup 2023 and reached the final in the ODI World Cup 2023. Virat was the Player of the Tournament for scoring 765 runs in 11 innings in the tournament. Rohit, on the other hand, impressed everyone with his aggressive batting.
Now that the tournament is finished, the focus has shifted towards T20Is. The T20 World Cup 2024 is approaching fast and is set to happen in the middle of the year. Before the big tournament, the two senior players are set to miss two big series against Australia and South Africa, which can act as a good opportunity for them to prepare for the big tournament in the West Indies and the USA.
Gautam Gambhir backs the seniors to make it to the T20 World Cup 2024
The Indian management though, has left the senior players to decide about their future in the T20Is themselves. It is interesting to note that India has not picked Rohit or Virat for the T20Is since 2022. The last T20I match the two batters played was the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2022 against England. Since then, India has opted for youngsters in the T20I series against teams like New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies.
Speaking about the participation of Virat and Rohit in the T20 World Cup, Gautam Gambhir said that he backs the experienced batters to be in the T20 World Cup 2024 for India. The former Indian cricketer said that it is essential to have Rohit and Virat in the big tournament like the T20 World Cup.
