Jay Shah issued a stern warning to the players who have been prioritizing the IPL over international cricket. The secretary of the Indian Cricket Board wrote a letter to those cricketers and mentioned his concern regarding the change in priorities of the players. While Jay called IPL a huge success over the years, he has not been happy with the motives of some of the players.

The likes of Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan are claimed to be not interested in playing for India by some of the reports. Jay considered players with such intentions and felt that such a move from the players was not anticipated by the board. Shah added that the Indian Cricket Board is built upon the players who have succeeded in domestic cricket in the past.

In his statement, Jay claimed that the players who wish to play for India cannot bypass domestic cricket. He added that the players who are centrally contracted must be able to play for their teams in domestic cricket. Shah reminded the players of the values that are to be followed in order to play for India at the highest level in different formats of the game.

‘Non-participation in domestic cricket will carry severe implications’ – Jay Shah

The warning is to those players who have not reported to their domestic teams to play Ranji Trophy citing various reasons. While some of them have injury issues, others are just careless. There is a feeling among the fans that the players are not interested in taking part in domestic cricket, as it does not offer them much pay compared to league cricket like the IPL.

Shah addressed it as a concern and made it clear that the players would be selected based on their performance in domestic cricket followed by the leagues. He warned the players saying not following the guidelines would lead to ‘severe implications. “Performance in domestic tournaments remains a critical yardstick for selection, and non-participation in domestic cricket will carry severe implications,” wrote the Secretary of the Indian Board.
