‘Huge blow for Aussies’ – Fans react as Australia set to miss services of star all-rounder in upcoming 2023 World Cup match against England
Star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of Australia’s upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup match against England. The 35-year-old suffered a freak accident on Monday evening, 30 October, when he fell down from the back of a gold cart. The incident resulted in a concussion for Maxwell for the Australia-England match at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday.
According to Cricket.com.au, the Australian team was enjoying their time in Ahmedabad as they are having a week-long break before their next match. Maxwell injured himself badly after the fall, while no one else in the team was hurt during the game. The batting all-rounder’s return to action will depend on his recovery.
“Maxwell was riding on the back of a golf cart in the dark after a round on Monday when he fell off, suffering a concussion and significant bruising. The Australians had been blowing off steam by playing golf in Gujarat during a week-long break between games. No one else was hurt in the incident,” cricket.com.au reported on Wednesday, 1 November.
Maxwell has been instrumental in Australia’s campaign so far
Maxwell and Australia had a dismal start to their World Cup campaign, but things quickly turned around. The right-hander shattered the record for the fastest century in World Cup history by hitting a 40-ball century against the Netherlands at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. His 24-ball 41 was also crucial in Australia’s thrilling 5-run win over New Zealand.
At an average of close to 40 and a strike rate of 148.48, Maxwell has accumulated 196 runs in six matches. He was also impressive with his right-arm off-spin, picking up four wickets. His absence will hurt the five-time champions against England, but given the performances of both teams, defeating the defending champions will not be too much of a headache for the Men in Yellow.
Pat Cummins and Co. have won four of their six matches and a couple of more wins are crucial for them to secure their semifinal spot. On the other hand, Jos Buttler’s side have lost five of their six games and are currently bottom of the points table with no chance of qualification.
