Pakistan pacer Zaman Khan made his ODI debut in the Asia Cup 2023 game against Sri Lanka. In what was a virtual semifinal against the Lankan Lions, both teams needed to win to reach the final and play India. Notably, during Pakistan’s game against India, the likes of Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf got injured. After the game, both players were ruled out.

They were replaced by the likes of Khan and Shahnawaz Dahani. The former reached the island nation in time while Dahani could only reach during midnight of September 14-15. At this point, both Lanka and Pakistan were playing the must-win game. Meanwhile, ahead of this game, Khan, who plays for Lahore Qalandars in PSL, made his ODI debut. He made his T20I debut a few months back.

Talking about the game, the two-time winners amassed 252/7. At one stage, they were reduced to 130/5 before the forced rain break. This break led to the game being reduced from 45 overs to 42 per side. Meanwhile, Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmad helped the team reach the score. In reply, the home side had a great start as Pakistan pacers struggled.

Zaman also struggled with the new ball against the likes of Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, and Kusal Mendis. Despite the likes of Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama putting in 100 runs for the third wicket, the team had a collapse with Iftikhar taking three wickets. In the end, the defending champions, Lions needed to score nine runs in the last over. It was bowled by Khan with Pramod Madushan and Charitha Asalanka at the crease.

Zaman Khan failed to defend the score

In the last over, Zaman managed to give away only three runs for the first four balls. It came down to six runs needed to win from two balls. Asalanka managed to hit a boundary via an outside edge. It came down to two runs and the left-hander managed to get the winning runs.

After the game, renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle pointed out that Khan missed the opportunity to run out Matheesha Pathirana at the non-striking end.
