In the first game of the Trinidad leg of the ongoing CPL 2023, Trinbago Knight Riders and Guyana Amazon Warriors locked horns. It was TKR’s first home in the season and was coming off a close win against defending champions, Jamaica Tallawahs. On the other hand, the Warriors were coming off three back-to-back wins. Meanwhile, in the game, GAW won the toss and elected to bat first.

The home side, Knight Riders had a poor start as they lost Mark Deyal (1) in the second over. Martin Guptill, who scored his maiden hundred a while back, continued to struggle as he scored 20-ball 15. Nicholas Pooran (18) also couldn’t go big as his inning was ended by Azam Khan’s catch behind the stumps. At 59/3, the Red Brigade was in big trouble.

Their middle-order players such as wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker (38), Akeil Hosien (44*), and skipper Keiron Pollard (25*) helped the team reach 172/8 at the end of the innings. For the five-time finalists, Guyana, Odean Smith took three wickets while Romario Shepherd, Imran Tahir, and Keemo Paul took one each.

Trinbago Knight Riders failed to keep their winning streak going

In reply, the visitors lost the wicket of Chanderpaul Hemraj in the third over. At 18/1, the likes of Shai Hope and Saim Ayub put together 93 runs for the second wicket. Both players scored fifties and got out to Andre Russell and Ali Khan respectively. Azam Khan remained not out at 29 while Shimron Hetmyer scored 14 to take the team over the line with five balls left.

With this win, the Green Brigade is now on the top of the table. On the other hand, TKR is now on the third spot, only behind two-time finalists, St Lucia Kings. For the Knight Riders, only Ali Khan and Andre Russell took two wickets each. The likes of Sunil Narine, Waqar Salamkheil (their recent sensation) and others not picking wickets hurt them in the end.
