An old video clip featuring former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has resurfaced on the internet, shedding light on a contentious moment from the 2011 ODI World Cup final. Gambhir, who played a pivotal role in India’s historic win, is seen in the clip accusing his former captain, MS Dhoni, for missing out on his century in the final by just 3 runs

Gambhir said that he never thought about his individual score and was just chasing the target to help the team win the match. But he revealed that while batting on 97, Dhoni came to him and reminded him that only 3 runs were needed for the milestone due to which he got distracted. Fans have taken to social media to express their reactions to this revelation.

Watch the video here:

“I have been asked this question many times, as to what happened when I was on 97. I tell everyone that before getting to 97, I never thought about my individual score, but only looked at the target set by Sri Lanka. I remember that after the completion of one over, Dhoni told me that ‘three runs are remaining, get these three runs and your hundred would be completed’,” Gambhir was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

“When your mind suddenly turns to your individual performance, individual score, then somewhere you have a rush of blood. Before that moment, my target was only to chase Sri Lanka’s target. If only that target remained in my mind, maybe, I would have easily scored my hundred. Till I was on 97, I was in the present. But as soon as I thought that I was just three runs away from getting a hundred, the rush of blood caused by the desire to get to a hundred took over.” he added.

These three runs would trouble me for the rest of my life: Gautam Gambhir

The video has ignited debates among cricket fans, providing a glimpse into the dynamics and emotions that unfold in high-stakes cricket matches, making it a nostalgic and intriguing topic for fans of the sport. Gambhir himself said that he knew that these 3 runs would trouble him for the rest of his life.

“That’s why it’s important to remain in the present… When I was walking back to the dressing room after being dismissed, I said to myself that these three runs would trouble me for the rest of my life and that is true. Even to this day, people ask me why I couldn’t get those three runs,” he said.
