Former India spinner set to guide Bangladesh’s spin-bowling department for upcoming ODI World Cup 2023
All the teams participating in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 have started practising for the major world tournament. Bangladesh, who didn’t perform well in the recently concluded Asia Cup but defeated the Indian team will be playing 2 warm-up matches ahead of the World Cup.
Meanwhile, to improve Bangladesh‘s spin bowling department, the team’s cricket board has appointed former India spinner Sridharan Sriram as their new technical consultant. The former cricketer will be joining the team’s camp on September 27 in Guwahati. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus said that Sriram will help the team to provide knowledge about the Indian conditions as the tournament is set to be hosted by India.
“Sriram has joined as the technical consultant. We will get a lot of technical support from him. He knows all the wickets in India. He can tell us about the weather conditions too. Very few of our players have played in India, so his input will be quite important,” Yunus was quoted as saying by Zee News.
Bangladesh to play their first match against Afghanistan in ODI World Cup
Interestingly, Sriram has also served as a technical consultant for the Bangla Tigers in 2022 and was also serving as a head coach for the team in the shortest format. Sriram has a lot of experience when it comes to guiding the spinners as before 2022, he was Australia’s spin-bowling coach for 6 years.
Bangladesh don’t have many quality spinners apart from Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. It’d be interesting to see how will Bangladesh manage with only a few spinners or if they will take some new faces to the grand event.
Their first match of the tournament will be against Afghanistan which will be played on October 7 at the Himachal Prades Cricket Association in Himachal Pradesh. Bangladesh produced a magnificent performance against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup 2023 where they clinched a convincing victory over the Afghans.
