Former Indian spinner player Harbhajan Singh made a controversial statement during the highly anticipated final match of the ODI World Cup 2023 between India and Australia at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19. India were asked to bat first after which they put up a total of 240 runs in the first innings.

Meanwhile, during the commentary, Harbhajan made a remark about Anushka Sharma, the wife of former India captain Virat Kohli, that caught the attention of fans and ignited a social media sensation. As the match unfolded, with Indian batsmen making an impressive start but Australia making a strong comeback, Harbhajan took a moment during the commentary to share his observation about players’ families openly supporting them on the field.

He specifically pointed out that Anushka and Athiya Shetty, wife of Indian wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul, engaged in conversation, suggesting that they might be discussing films rather than cricket. Harbhajan’s comment, though seemingly controversial, was intended for entertainment purposes. He playfully speculated that Anushka and Athiya might not be avid cricket enthusiasts, proposing that their discussion on the sidelines could be related to their involvement in the film industry.

“I don’t know if they’re talking about cricket or films, I don’t think they know much about cricket,” Harbhajan was quoted as saying by Crictracker.

Anushka Sharma has come to support the Indian team in almost every match

It’s important to note that Harbhajan Singh made this statement in a light-hearted manner, emphasising the casual banter often heard in the world of sports commentary. Anushka, a regular supporter of Kohli, has been seen cheering for Team India throughout the tournament, including the final match in Ahmedabad.

Her presence at the stadium has become a common sight, reflecting her unwavering support for her husband and the Indian cricket team. While Harbhajan’s remark caused a stir on social media, it’s essential to recognize the intention behind his words – to infuse a bit of fun into the cricketing atmosphere. However, as of now, Australia are set to chase the 240-run target.
