Sri Lanka displayed an amazing bowling performance against the defending champions in the ODI World Cup 2023. A collective effort from the bowling unit of Sri Lanka meant that England was reduced to a total of just 156 runs. It is one of the lowest totals in M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru in the history of the ODIs. Sri Lanka was brilliant with the ball right from the beginning.

Opting to bat first, England had a good start to their innings. The opening pair gave a decent start to England’s innings. But the wicket of Dawid Malan began the collapse for England. From 40/0 at one stage, England ended up getting bundled out for 156 runs. England lost their 10 wickets for just 116 runs, which showed an incredible turnaround from Sri Lanka.

The wicket in Bengaluru was surprisingly a bit spicy. There was some extra bounce for the pacers. Early in the innings, the pacers got the ball to swing. There was some seam on offer for the pacers. The spinners like Dhananjaya De Silva and Maheesh Theekshana got the ball to spin. It indicated that the wicket was not the easiest to bat on. But neither was it a 156 wicket.

Sri Lankan pacers wreak havoc against England

England have themselves to blame. They committed some unwanted errors and were dismissed in the process. Some of their dismissals were soft. There were some foolish run-outs. But some of the deliveries were due to the extra bounce and seam on offer for the bowlers. It led to a good contest between the bat and the ball. The bowlers made the most of the conditions.

The Sri Lankan pacers were excellent. Angelo Mathews on his comeback claimed 2/14 in his 5 overs. Kasun Rajitha claimed 3 wickets as well. Lahiru Kumara was the star of the show, he was quick and got the ball to seam and bounce a bit more. The express pacer claimed 3 wickets and rattled the batting unit of England. No batter could cross a score of over 40 runs from England, which was bizarre.
