Djokovic bags sixth Wimbledon title

Novak Djokovic created history by equalling Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s tally of 20 Grand Slams.

Apart from six Wimbledon titles, he has nine titles at the Australian Open, three at the U.S. Open and two at the French Open.

Djokovic came back from behind to defeat Italian challenger Matteo Berrettini 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

This was his third consecutive championship at the All England Club.

The 34-year-old from Serbia is now the only man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the first three major tournaments in a season.

he needs the Olympic gold medal and US Open title to become the first man to ever win a Golden Slam.

Also, this was Djokovic’s 30th major final. Among men, only Federer has played more – 31.

Early jitters

Djokovic is known for his steely nerves but there were some jitters when the World No. 1 began his final against Berretttini, the first-ever finalist from Italy as he let slip a 5-2.

An upset looked like a possibility when Berrettini outlasted Djokovic in the first-set tie-breaker to win the set.

However, Djokovic came back by breaking Berrettini’s serve twice in the second set.

He was leading 5-2 in the second set and Berrettini raised his game once again and broke Djokovic’s serve.

But the Serb made sure he closed out the set with his service game that followed.

In the third set, Berrettini dug his heels in and started firing some thunderous serves and forehand winners.

In fact, Djokovic faced as many as 3 break points when leading at 3-2 in the third set.

But Djokovic saved them all and held his serve.

The feisty Serb hit top gear in the 4th set, which eventually turned out to be the final set of the men’s singles final.
