Spain’s women’s football team have created history as they won their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup title after they defeated England 1-0 in the final match of the 2023 edition of the grand tournament on Sunday, August 20. Spain skipper Olga Carmona scored the only goal of the match which became the difference between the two teams.

Almost 75 thousand fans were present in the Stadium Australia in Sydney supporting their favourite team. The English side were the favourites to win the 9th edition of the world tournament. However, Spain were better than Sarina Wiegman’s side in the decider match of the tournament.

Spanish captain Carmona scored a magnificent goal in the 29th minute of the game and became the youngest player to score a goal in the Women’s World Cup final after USA’s Alex Morgan’s goal in 2011. Carmona also became the only Spanish footballer to score a goal in FIFA World Cup final after Andres Iniesta scored the match-winning goal 2010 World Cup final against the Netherlands.

Hinata Miyazawa won the Golden Boot award

Carmona also scored in the semi-final as well against Sweden and became the first player to score in both semi-final and final of the World Cup after Carli Lloyd in 2015. Coming back to the match, Spain’s defence was very strong as they didn’t let the English player hit too many shots towards the target.

Interestingly, Spain were also given a penalty shortly after the hour mark for a handball by English midfielder Keira Walsh. However, goalkeeper Mary Earps displayed her brilliant goalkeeping skills and saved Jennifer Hermoso’s spot-kick by diving to her left. Earps also won the Golden Glove Award for her brilliant display throughout the tournament.

England’s players were also good but it wasn’t enough for them to beat the mighty Spanish side. Spain’s Aitana Bonmatí won the Golden Ball award while the Golden Boot award was given to Japan’s Hinata Miyazawa.
