Euro 2020: Denmark march into last 4

Denmark’s dream run at Euro 2020 continues.

In a game that ebbed and flowed, the Danish national team beat the Czechs in an exciting match winning 2-1.

The game was held at the Olympic Stadium in Baku (Azerbaijan).

The Danes have now scored 10 goals in their last three matches.

Indeed, this is a stunning comeback after starting the tournament with two defeats, the first amid shocking circumstances when Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch.

Three weeks on, they are dreaming of a repeat of 1992 when Denmark won the European Championship defeating Germany in the finals, despite not even qualifying.

Energetic start

The game got off to a fast start as Denmark took the lead within the opening five minutes.

Denmark midfielder Thomas Delaney opened the scoring in the 5th minute of the match against the Czech Republic.

Jens Larsen floated a cross from the corner of the field to the centre of the Czech penalty area, from where Delaney struck a powerful header into the net, after bouncing on the turf.

Next, Czech keeper, Tomas Vaclik had to deny Mikkel Damsgaard to prevent the Danes doubling their lead.

However, the Czechs then came into the game and twice Kasper Schmeichel was forced into saves by Tomas Holes.

Just before half-time, Kasper Dolberg doubled the Danes’ lead.

Attacking full-back Joakim Mæhle flew down the left and in an exquisite display of skill, lifted a cross with the outside of his right boot, which landed perfectly for Dolberg to volley home.

Czech Republic responded straight after half-time.

Czech boss Jaroslav Silhavy made two substitutions at the break and the introduction of Jakub Jankto and Michael Krmencik made an instant impact.

Krmencik’s fierce shot stung the palms of Danish keeper, Schmeichel before the Leicester goalkeeper was forced to turn Antonin Barak’s shot behind.

The Czechs finally scored as Schick latched onto Vladimir Coufal’s cross to put the ball into the net.

The strike was Schick’s fifth of the tournament – making him joint top goalscorer, level with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Czech pressure increased throughout the second half.

However, try as they might, they were unable to find an equaliser as Denmark found the strength to hold on and go through.
