Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winners Mumbai Indians have decided to move from Rohit Sharma as captain. He took on the captaincy from Ricky Ponting in the middle of the 2013 season and the team won their maiden title later on. Since then, the team went on to win four more titles till 2020. In the last three seasons, MI qualified for the playoffs only in the 2023 season.

Talking about Sharma’s captaincy, he is the second-most successful captain after Chennai Super Kings’ MS Dhoni. The former has played 158 games as captain, winning 87 and losing 67. Now, for the first time since 2013, the right-hander will play as a player in the team.

Meanwhile, Sharma has been replaced by Hardik Pandya as captain. The latter made his comeback via player trade with Gujarat Titans without giving away another player. In a statement released by the former champions, they expressed their gratitude to Sharma.

“Hardik Pandya announced as captain for the IPL 2024 season. Mumbai Indians today announced a significant leadership transition for the upcoming 2024 season. Renowned all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to take the helm as the captain of the Mumbai Indians, succeeding its longest-serving, one of the most successful and loved captains the illustrious Rohit Sharma,” Mumbai Indians wrote in a statement on Instagram.

“We express our gratitude to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership; his tenure as the captain of the Mumbai Indians since 2013 has been nothing short of extraordinary. His leadership has not only brought unparalleled success to the team but has also solidified his place as one of the finest captains in the history of the IPL. Under his guidance, MI became one of the most successful and loved teams ever. We will look forward to his guidance and experience on and off the field to further strengthen MI.

We welcome Hardik Pandya as the new captain of MI and wish him all the very best.”
