‘Chalo Dravid ka backing kuch kaam aya’ – Fans react as Suryakumar Yadav’s fifty gives relief to Team India in their 1st ODI win vs Australia

Suryakumar Yadav was in action for Team India during the first ODI vs Australia at Mohali, Punjab on 22 September. When India’s squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup was announced, few eyebrows were raised over the selection of the star batter because of his poor numbers in the 50-over format.

But, the head coach, Rahul Dravid attended a pre-match press and vowed to back him in this ongoing series. So, all eyes were on him when he came out to bat but this time, he did not disappoint as Suryakumar scored 50 runs off 49 balls, including five fours and one six. Seeing such a solid knock, fans shared their views on social media.

Before the first ODI, Rahul Dravid said: “We completely back Suryakumar Yadav, we believe he will turn it around in ODI, will be getting opportunity in the first 2 ODI”. It was a much-needed inning for him as before the match, he was experiencing a bad run of form in the ODI format. Now, he has scored 587 runs in 26 ODI innings, including three fifties.

Speaking of the match, Suryakumar Yadav came out to bat when Team India were four down for 185 runs in 32.3 overs. Then, he and Rahul put up a partnership of 80 runs for the fifth wicket. It was a composed knock from the star batter without playing many of his fancy shots. After the match, Suryakumar said that he was looking to calm himself and trying to bat deep. 

He said: “That was what I was dreaming off when I started playing this format. Try and bat til the end as much as possible and finish the game for the team. I couldn’t do that today but definitely loving my new role. I have been wondering what has been happening. The colour of the ball is the same. The teams are the same. The bowlers are the same. I think I was hurrying a bit. I thought, let’s take a little bit more time. Calm myself, take it slowly and try and bat deep.”
