Carabao Cup: West Ham upset Man United

Manchester United suffered a 1-0 home defeat to West Ham in their Carabao Cup third-round fixture.

Both teams made wholesale changes to their teams and fielded vastly different line-ups compared to their Premier League meeting last weekend.

West Ham capitalized on their bright start as they went ahead in the 9th minute with a Manuel Lanzini strike.

The Argentine drove the ball past Dean Henderson as a low cross from Ryan Hendricks fell on his feet.

The home team had no answer to that goal with Mason Greenwood coming closest to levelling the tie for United, but the 19-year-old frustratingly witnessed Alphonso Areola denying him with his feet.

Everton out

Everton were another Premier League team whose EFL Cup journey met a premature end last night.

Charlie Austin had put Queens Park Rangers ahead twice, but Lucas Digne and Andros Townsend equalized for the Merseyside outfit.

The match went to penalties, but Everton keeper Asmir Begovic could not keep out any of the QPR spot-kicks.

Seny Diang made the first and deciding save of the shootout as the Hoops keeper stopped Tom Davies’s shot to win it 8-7 for QPR.

Spurs and Chelsea survive

Nuno Espirito Santo returned to his old stomping ground Molineux as Tottenham Hotspur took on Wolves.

The Lilywhites suffered some disappointing results lately, but they picked up a much necessary win before this weekend’s North London Derby as they won 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Chelsea and Aston Villa played out a 1-1 draw before Chelsea edged past Villa in a 4-3 penalty shootout.

Timo Werner ended his scoring drought in the 54th minute to put Chelsea ahead, but the Blues’ lead lasted only 10 minutes as Cameron Archer equalized for Villa.

Ben Chilwell’s return could have ended in a sour note for the left-back as he hit the crossbar during the penalty shootouts.

But, Kepa Arrizabalaga’s penalty heroics earned Chelsea a place in the fourth round of the competition, where they will face Southampton.

Brighton, Leicester progress

An Aaron Connolly brace took Brighton to the next stage of the Carabao Cup, condemning Swansea to a 2-0 defeat.

The Irishman had scored only once this year before he broke the stalemate in the 88th minute.

Connolly took only five minutes to score his second when he hit the back of the net far beyond the reach of Swansea keeper Steven Benda.

Ademola Lookman scored his first goal for Leicester City in the Fox’s 2-0 win over Millwall.

George Long steered away a Kelechi Iheanacho effort, but could only direct it towards Lookman, who was 8 yards away from the goal.

The RB Leipzig loanee made no mistake to put Leicester ahead before Iheanacho doubled the lead two minutes from time.

Arsenal picked up an effortless 3-0 victory over Wimbledon, but their struggles in attacking-third play were still imminent.

Alexandre Lacazette converted a penalty.

Afterwards, Emil Smith-Rowe and Eddie Nketiah got their names on the scoresheet to hand the Gunners a comfortable victory.
