Can Rohit Sharma move to any other team as IPL 2024 trading window set to reopen? Explainer
With Mumbai Indians (MI) as the director and Hardik Pandya as the protagonist, we have already witnessed a lot of drama ahead of the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Pandya was on the retained list of Gujarat Titans (GT) even when there were rumors of him being traded to MI. However, a day after the deadline for player retention, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) lent a helping hand to their arch-rivals by trading Cameron Green for INR 17.5 crore and MI landed their former player.
One of the high-profile trades in IPL history, but things didn’t end there. In a surprise announcement, the all-rounder was named MI’s captain. The massive move, taking away the captaincy from Rohit, who had taught the franchise to dream since 2013, did not go down well with their fans. The franchise received huge backlash on Social media; their followers dwindled, and videos and pictures of fans burning their blue jerseys went viral.
The former MI skipper’s future with the franchise is now uncertain. None of the other MI players took to their social media to welcome Pandya back to the squad. In fact, Suryakumar Yadav posted a heartbreaking emoji after the shocking update. Had they informed the 36-year-old before the trade window officially closed on December 12, he would have made a move to another franchise. But with the trading window set to open again, can Rohit move to any other team?
Know more about IPL 2024 trading window reopening
As per IPL rules, the player-trading window opens a month after the end of a particular season and then remains open until one week before the auction date. The next day of the auction, the window will reopen until a month before the start of the next season.
Hence, the IPL 2024 trade window was closed on December 12 as the mini-auction was scheduled in Dubai on December 19. It will reopen on December 12 and will be up to a month before the 2024 season begins. This means the window is likely to remain open till February and franchises can transfer Rohit, if he and MI are inclined.
