Boris Becker set to be released from prison

Former tennis player Boris Becker, who was sentenced to prison in April 2022, is set to walk free after being approved for an accelerated release program.

He has been facing 15 months behind bars.

However, under the Government’s Early Removal Scheme, he could be sent to Germany in November after seven-and-a-half months.

Germany has a softer penal system than Britain.

The Home Office has confirmed that Becker is eligible to be deported from the UK as a foreign national who has served a prison sentence of more than 12 months behind bars.

The three-times Wimbledon champion was initially detained at Wandsworth Prison in South London but was moved to HMP Huntercombe, Oxfordshire, in late May.

Huntercombe is a prison predominently used to house foreign offenders.

As per a spokesperson, “Any foreign national convicted of a crime and given a prison sentence is considered for deportation at the earliest opportunity.”

The six-time Grand Slam winner has been found guilty of breaching bankruptcy rules by concealing nearly £2.5million in cash, shares and property.

This means Becker might be reunited with his family in time for Christmas.

Boris Becker is a former world No. 1 who has won six Grand Slam singles titles as well as a 1999 Olympic gold medal in doubles.

Teaming with Michael Stich, Becker defeated South Africans Wayne Ferreira and Piet Norval at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in the final.
