Boney Kapoor South Indian Cinema debate at a 2024 roundtable highlighted evolving dynamics in Indian filmmaking. Joining producer Naga Vamsi, Kapoor discussed Bollywood’s global legacy and regional cinema’s growing impact.

During a discussion on Galatta Plus, Kapoor emphasized Bollywood’s recognition on international platforms. “The King of Morocco honored Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan,” he said, noting South Indian films’ unique appeal. Telugu films thrive in the US, while Tamil films dominate in Singapore and Malaysia, showcasing diverse markets.

Naga Vamsi countered, asserting South Indian cinema’s transformative role in reshaping Indian film narratives. “We South Indians have changed how you view cinema,” he stated, referencing RRR, Baahubali, and Pushpa 2. He suggested Bollywood films were previously limited to audiences in Bandra and Juhu.

Kapoor, visibly irked, clarified, “When I discussed historical films, I meant broader terms. Forums like these don’t permit detailed exploration.” While acknowledging South Indian films’ success, he reaffirmed Bollywood’s enduring legacy and global presence.

Boney Kapoor’s Work Front

Professionally, Boney Kapoor recently appeared in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. As a producer, Kapoor worked on Maidaan, a biopic on legendary football coach Syed Abdul Rahim.

The film, starring Ajay Devgn and featuring music by AR Rahman, faced significant delays due to the COVID-19 lockdown and Cyclone Tauktae. Despite challenges, Maidaan is set to release on April 10, 2024.

The debate between Boney Kapoor and Naga Vamsi underscores the shifting dynamics in Indian cinema, where Bollywood and South Indian industries collaborate to redefine its global image.
